The Book of Coggie

rough drafts

At first, James wasn’t sure he’d get to be Jackie Robinson for his class project: American Heroes. Four classmates clamored to be him. But I’d like to believe 42 assessed the situation up in heaven and deemed my son worthy (both were January babies and loved to steal bases btw). And, he was. His oral presentation was charming, matter of fact, and respectful without getting preachy. “I was the very first Major League player to break the color barrier. In the 1940s, people with different-colored skin weren’t allowed to play with people with white skin. I admire Jackie Robinson, because he would do anything to play baseball. He never gave up and got called names I’m not actually supposed to say here but he just kept going.”

A+!
